To look at this amazing coin is to behold greatness. Yes, it’s only graded AU-58; but no, its beauty is not adequately summarized by this condition rating. We have seen MS-60, MS-61, and yes even MS-62 specimens of this extremely rare date that did not match this coin’s splendor.

Its surfaces are the most spectacular shade of golden-orange in color, and are illuminated with brilliant luster. The details on all of the raised devices display precision sharpness. None of the obverse’s small, scattered abrasions detract in any way from this piece’s exquisite pleasingness. The reverse is clearly Mint State in appearance, probably worthy of the MS-62 grade. Its color turns to an even brighter golden-yellow-orange, and its strike is as bold as one blow of the coin press could make it.

When you consider that the Carson City Mint produced only 5,000 $20 gold pieces in 1891, and that probably no more than 350 of them survive today, you wonder how many from that population could match this stunning specimen’s bloom. It will complement any high grade set of Carson City double eagles.
