Lest we dismiss the significance of an example of this date in AU-55, let us first consider its population. PCGS reports that there are three graded in AU-55 with none in AU-53 or AU-58. NGC reports that the piece offered here is the only one graded AU-55, likewise, with no AU-53s or 58s. There are two Mint State examples for sure, one MS-61 and one MS-62, both in PCGS holders.NGC also reports an MS-62, although it’s probably a cross-over event.

This date is in a virtual tree-way tie with the 1870-CC and 1878-CC for the rarest in the “CC” half eagle series. The piece offered here is therefore significant in this context. It’s got no-question AU-55 characteristics, including a better-than-average strike, ample luster, and light golden-orange color. Yes, the coin has been dipped. And yes, it has a moderate number of contact marks. But, if it were say, an 1870-CC half eagle, collectors would turn somersaults over it. Moreover, this 1873-CC possesses a much bolder strike on the reverse than do most 1870-CCs, especially on the eagle’s breast.

This coin is destined to be placed in one of the finest sets of “CC” half eagles.
