Rarely do we get examples of this date in any grade close to this AU-50 rating. In the past, we have sold an MS-63, an MS-62, an AU-55, and several XFs. The piece offered here ranks in the top five for condition consensus for all known survivors.

The surfaces are light gray in appearance, with a generous amount of luster remaining. A gentle beige-gray haze veils part of the obverse and peripheral sections on the reverse. Details on all the raised devices are sharp, with slight weakness visible at the center of Ms. Liberty’s head. Several faint scratches are visible in the obverse fields when the coin is tilted. Minimal contact marks and a few wispy hairlines are seen on both sides.

The distinguishable diagnostic die cracks, one through the mintmark and one extending up the right cereal wreath, stand out.

Specimens like this make collecting Carson City coins so rewarding. They are extremely rare and seldom offered.
