This date has long been overshadowed by the 1870-CC, 1871-CC, and 1873-CC (with and without arrows) quarters. Still, it is a very elusive date to find, especially in grades above VF. The piece offered here is one of the top-eight highest graded examples in the condition census.

The surfaces on this coin exude originality. They are light, steel-grey in color, and only have a whisper of un-doctored, shaded haze on them. About 15% of the coin’s luster is present, giving it a borderline AU look. There are no bothersome contact marks or hairlines, with only a smattering of small ticks barely visible in the fields on both sides. The details on the high points are exceptionally bold, especially on the reverse, where all of the eagle’s feathers are visible.

Since only one fortunate collector can own an example of the 1872-CC quarter in Mint State condition (an MS-63 piece is the only one at this level), high-end circulated specimens, like the one offered here, are in demand.
