What good is gold if a person’s world collapses around him? Plainly the people touting the value of gold as a protective hedge against a global economic meltdown aren’t interested in the answer to this question. Instead, they advise fearful individuals how to “crash proof” their portfolios before the looming currency crisis—and even how to profit from it. Still, there needs to be a stronger slogan than “Buy gold for protection and profit.” Will a pile of gold save you from an economic disaster, as a vaccination will immunize you against the swine flu?

Gold represents different things to different people. A girlfriend gets ecstatic when her boyfriend gives her a gold engagement ring. The CEO of a gold mining company sees rosy days ahead when his exploration team discovers a rich new vein. A numismatist gains satisfaction when he achieves his long-term goal of completing a set of rare gold coins. An unemployed person feels temporary relief when she cashes in her scrap gold jewelry so she can pay her bills. An elderly couple, fearing an apocalyptic future finds security in a tube of gold Krugerrands. Opponents of the American economic model view gold as a hedge against the collapse of the U. S. dollar. Gurus of the precious metals market search for new angles to use to serve up their daily predictions on the direction of the price of gold.

On Friday, October 16, 2009, a reporter from the Reno Gazette-Journal newspaper called to interview Southgate Coins’ owner Rusty Goe about the recent rise in the price of gold bullion. The Carson City Coin Collector’s of America Inaugural Comstock/Carson Mint Seminar was held on October 5 to 7, 2006.
