This example has all the attributes of the many Carson City twenty-dollar gold pieces that have been brought back to the United States from Europe. Its surfaces are gently hazed with a delicate layer of dust. The luster is unimpaired, though slightly subdued because of the dusty haze. Both sides display a rich, golden-orange color, and the surfaces are lightly marked with small, scattered abrasions. The strike, as is typical on 1884-CC double eagles, is sharp, except for a slight sign of weakness on top of the crown on Ms. Liberty’s head.
Although there always seems to be enough Mint State examples of “common-date” “CC” double eagles to go around, it’s all relative. This is more easy to comprehend when you realize there are more Mint State examples of just one date from the Philadelphia Mint double eagle series (1904 for instance) than there are Mint State examples for all nineteen dates combined in the Carson City series. Any Mint State example of a “CC” double eagle, at today’s price levels, appears to be a good deal.
