NGC’s graders saw why this coin stands head and shoulders above other 1875-CC double eagles in AU-58, and rightly awarded it with a Plus-designation. The piece displays the most vivid gold-and-yellow colors imaginable. The intense luster radiates off its surfaces. The details are as well defined as you will see on any Type II “CC” $20 gold piece. If any negative characteristics must be mentioned, they are the arched scrape between Ms. Liberty’s nose and star No. 4, and the very thin, almost invisible diagonal scratch in the left obverse field. Frankly, these minor distractions are easy to ignore when beholding the coin’s jaw-dropping appearance.
