Mintage: 8,680

We bought this coin with the thought it might upgrade to AU-50—it is definitely on the borderline. About 25% of the coin’s original luster remains and the surfaces have an attractive, warm, golden-orange hue to them. Someone, sometime, probably wiped a layer of dirt off this coin but the light cleaning did not cause damage.

Small, scattered abrasions are visible on both sides, none of which are incongruous with the grade. The strike is a bit weak on the crown of Ms. Liberty’s head and on the eagle’s breast, which is probably why the graders at PCGS did not give it a 50-point condition rating. Still, this is a very eye appealing example of this key date “CC” $5 gold piece.
