POP 1-Finest known
The Carson City Mint struck more than 2.3 million silver dollars in 1890, the largest quantity of silver dollars ever produced in one year at that facility. Fast forward 75 years to the mid-1960s, and we see U.S. government records report only 3,949 1890-CC silver dollars remained in Treasury stockpiles. This figure represents the fourth lowest total out of the thirteen Carson City dates sold in the GSA hoard sales between 1972 and 1980. The three dates with the lowest total, 1889-CC, 1892-CC, and 1893-CC, only had one example in the GSA hoard, making the 1890-CC the lowest population date out of the other ten years in the hoard.
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation began grading silver dollars still encased in original GSA holders in 2003. Before then all third-party grading services required owners of GSA silver dollars to break them out of the holders before submitting them. Hundreds of thousands of the nearly 2.9 million GSA Carson City silver dollars wound up in third-party grading service holders, shed of their artifactual government slabs. We estimate that fewer than ten percent of the GSA silver dollars remain in their original government plastic. As historic memorabilia, these survivors add value to the already premium-priced Carson City silver dollars. Coins from the GSA hoard, in their original holders, have attracted a devoted, and highly competitive, following of collectors.
Quality plays an important part in collector demand for “CC” GSA dollars. Coins like the one offered here, with its finest-known status, push competition to new levels. Being the only example of its date from the GSA hoard to have received the MS-65 rating, this 1890-CC silver dollar is elevated to elite class. Its creamy smooth surfaces, with minimal abrasions set the coin apart from all other 1890-CC dollars in GSA holders. The mostly white color is accented with a light beige-colored misty haze. A razor sharp strike adds the finishing touch to a spectacular piece that belongs in the finest set of GSA dollars.
