At first glance you will wonder why PCGS’s graders did not designate this coin as an AU specimen. Ample luster remains and the surfaces radiate an even silver-gray hue. The elements that influenced the graders’ decision are probably the light cleaning once applied to the coin and the several areas of weakness displayed on high points, most noticeably on Ms. Liberty’s head, arms and left leg, and on the edge of the eagle’s left wing (facing).
Still, this is a solid example of this key date in the “CC” Trade dollar series and is worthy of any high-grade circulated collection of coins from the Carson City Mint.
