Indian Head Cents
With coins disappearing from circulation in mass quantities during the Civil War, the U.S. government authorized the production of millions of new Indian Head cents to fill the gap. These new pennies, designed by James B. Longacre, were introduced in 1864 and continued to be produced through 1909.
The 1877 is the key date in the series. Many other dates are considered to be rare in high-grade Uncirculated condition, especially the examples with bright red color.
