The modern generation of the 21st century is unfamiliar with a penny almost the size of a half dollar. Yet, for U.S. citizens from the last decade of the 18th century through the Civil War in the 1860s, these Large cents were coins of the realm.

Variety collectors have had a field day with these oversized copper coins dated between 1793 and 1857. All of them love the celebrated Chain cent, both the “AMERICA” and “AMERI” varieties.
