Plain 4
This 1814 Large cent, at first glance, looks like it has much more detail compared to its rather low VF-35 grade. The stars on the obverse and the letters “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on the reverse, are the most accentuated. However, when taking a second glance, most wear is visible on Ms. Liberty’s head, particularly her hair, and the olive branches on the reverse. The denticles on the top-right of the obverse are completely worn. The “Plain 4” is apparent on the obverse, very distinguishable from the “Crosslet 4” that was also minted in 1814. This Large cent is an extremely dark, cobalt-black color, with hints of dark brown when held at an angle. Overall, a fantastic specimen for its grade.
