Lincoln Cents
The U.S. Mint introduced the Lincoln cent in 1909 to commemorate the 100th birthday of the revered Civil War-era president.
Victor David Brenner designed the original version of the Lincoln cent. His initials, V.D.B., at the bottom of the reverse side of the coin caused a controversy, and the government commissioned Brenner to re-locate them to a less conspicuous position. This created an instant rarity among collectors.
The Lincoln cent is the longest-running coin in production in U.S. history.
