Mercury Dimes
Sculptor Adolph A. Weinman designed the Winged Head, or “Mercury” dime. This series begins where the Barber dime series left off: in 1916. The series ended in 1945.
The Mercury dime features a more feminine-looking Ms. Liberty, adorned with a winged, Phrygian cap, which signifies liberty of thought. The nickname of “Mercury” came from the Roman messenger god. The reverse features a fasces cradled by an olive branch, which symbolically blends the United States’ power in arms and desire for peace.
The key date in the Mercury dime series is the 1916-D.
