Early Halves
If you are a variety collector, this section is sure to please you. Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, and Capped Bust half dollars have hundreds of varieties to select from, due to their constant die modifications in the late-18th and early-19th centuries. All three types featured a less-pure alloy of silver and copper mixture (.8924 and .1076, respectively). They also displayed edge lettering designating the denomination. The alloy of .900 silver and .100 copper didn’t become the standard until Capped Bust half dollars with reeded edges were struck in 1836.
