Seated Halves
Introduced in 1839, Liberty Seated half dollars featured an obverse designed by Christian Gobrecht and a reverse eagle similar to the one used in the Capped Bust series. This type provides collectors with many varieties to choose from, including Arrows at Date, Arrows and Rays, doubled dates, overdates, and No Motto specimens. Proof strikes are also available. Coins were made at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City Mints.
The obverse design featured Ms. Liberty seated on a rock foundation, with her right hand holding a shield with the word LIBERTY on it, and her left hand holding a pole with a cap on the end. The 1853-O Without Arrows variety, with only three known survivors, is the key date in the series. Carson City Seated halves are very popular.
