Walking Liberty Halves
Considered one of the most beautiful obverse designs created for United States coinage, the Walking Liberty half dollar was first struck in 1916. The series ended in 1947, and during this 31-year run coins were not produced in 7 of them: 1922, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1930, 1931, and 1932.
The obverse design features Ms. Liberty, draped in an American flag, walking with her right arm extended, and her left arm holding an olive branch. The word LIBERTY encircles the periphery, with the date placed centrally beneath Ms. Liberty’s feet. There is a sun rising from the left field, above the date. This obverse was eventually used for the American Silver Eagle series, which began in 1986.
The reverse depicts an eagle, with wings raised, but not outstretched. The eagle is perched on a rock. Beneath the eagle is HALF DOLLAR, and above the eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
The year 1921, with coins struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, represents the key date in the Walking Liberty half dollar series.
