Buffalo Nickels
James Earle Fraser, one of the foremost American sculptors, designed the Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickel. Introduced in 1913, Buffalo nickels (also called Bison nickels) received immediate public approval.
It became apparent, however, after limited circulation that the raised lettering on the words FIVE CENTS would get quickly worn down. Fraser modified his design, with the denomination’s words recessed beneath a separated straight mound of ground.
The 1937-D “Three-Legged” variety is a collector favorite.
