Although this date is viewed as common for the series, this particular Buffalo nickel has much more to offer to the avid collector. The obverse is brilliant, with clean fields and astounding detail in the Indian’s hair and feather headdress. A beige-veiled argent hue covers 80% of the obverse, leaving the other 20% stark white. On the reverse, the design seems to jump off the fields. In fact, it has so much detail that you can see the wrinkles above the bison’s elbow with the naked eye. For those of you pursuing varieties in your Buffalo nickel collection, this example offers an interesting Over Mintmark diagnostic, which allows you to see faintly the diagonal loop of an “S” mintmark on the lower right side of the “D.” This is the rarest of the Over Mintmark varieties for that year/mint. Overall, this is a pleasing specimen to own.
