In the early decades of the 21st century, quarters are one of the most widely used denominations in the United States. Everything from arcade games to compressed air to laundromats to snack and soda vending machines accept quarters as payment. Because of the quarter’s popularity, the American public tends to forget about larger denominations, such as the half dollar, and the misunderstood “golden” dollars. We are just too fond of the medium-sized coin with Washington’s face on it.

President Washington’s portrait did not always grace the quarter’s obverse. Through the years, there have been Capped Bust quarters, Draped Bust quarters, Liberty Seated quarters, Barber quarters, and Standing Liberty quarters.
