Standing Liberty
With Ms. Liberty standing proudly on the obverse, and the majestic eagle in-flight on the reverse, the Standing Liberty quarter, designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, is beautiful. Following the Barber quarter, the Standing Liberty quarter series began in 1916 (which happens to be the key date). The first two years of coin production created some controversy, since the original obverse design featured Ms. Liberty’s exposed breast. In 1917, a modification was made to cover her up.
Standing Liberty Quarters
Between 1916 and 1930 (the series end date), coins were only produced thirteen of the fifteen years. In 1925, the design was altered to display a recessed date, in an attempt to prevent the date from wearing off so quickly.
Full Head specimens, in other words examples displaying razor-sharp details on Ms. Liberty’s head and the shield to her right, are the ultimate prizes.
Southgate Coins owner, Rusty Goe, has successfully built award-winning sets of Standing Liberty quarters. If you are interested in adding to your collection, please browse our inventory below.
