Washington Quarters
For most people today (2010), the Washington quarter obverse design signifies twenty-five cents. The series began in 1932, and for sixty-six years (until 1998), obverse and reverse designs remained unchanged. In 1999, the U.S. Mint changed coin collecting radically when it launched its Statehood quarter program. For the next ten years, five quarter designs commemorating a different state, were introduced each year. This innovation purportedly brought over 100 million collectors into the hobby. Although most Washington quarters produced after 1965 are worth very little over face value (if anything), earlier dates of this series do hold at least some collectible value, if not just their value in silver. The 1932-D and 1932-S are the two keys in the series, with various other dates offering various degrees of challenge.
