Silver Dollars
These once-commonly-circulated coins are now all but removed from the nation’s monetary supply. In today’s society, with the popularity of paper currency, the annoyance of small-size dollar coinage (Susan B. Anthonys and Sacagaweas), and the convenience of plastic swipe-cards, the one-dollar denomination in coin form has become a rare sight in cash registers across the United States. Yet, for many sections of our country, the familiar “ting” of a silver dollar on a countertop was commonplace until the 1960s.
Seated Liberty and Trade Dollars
Silver dollar production began shortly after the formation of the United States Treasury, with the first Flowing Hair specimens banged out in 1794. Production continued through the 1800s with Draped Bust dollars, Liberty Seated dollars, Morgan dollars, and Trade dollars. The last true silver dollar, the Peace dollar, was struck from 1921 to 1935.
