Early Silver Dollars
The first silver dollar issued by the Philadelphia Mint in 1794 and 1795 featured the Flowing Hair design. The obverse depicted a version of Ms. Liberty, with free flowing hair. The reverse showed a scrawny, bald eagle, surrounded by a wreath. There is no denomination on the coin.
The Draped Bust silver dollar series followed the Flowing Hair series. This design featured a very French-looking Ms. Liberty, slightly plump, with a ribbon tying back her upper ponytail. Until 1798, both Flowing Hair and Draped Bust silver dollars shared the same reverse design. After 1798, the reverse featured a bolder, Heraldic Eagle.
