The current combined PCGS-NGC AU-58 submission events total for 1874-CC half eagles is eighteen, and and there are three Mint State submission events. The actual supply of different specimens in AU-58 slabs is smaller than the reported figure. We have seen nine different AU-58 specimens (including this one) and two of the Mint State specimens (it is unknown if there is in fact a third Mint State coin). The piece offered here is far and away the best AU-58 example we have ever seen; it is truly a borderline Mint State specimen..

Both sides exhibit bright, golden-orange-yellow color. The obverse displays only the fainest signs of circulation; the reverse looks like a Mint State coin. The light hairlines and the minimal number of contact marks on the obverse would qualify it for an MS-61 grade, were it not for the slightest bit of wear (barely detectable) on the high points. The reverse qualifies for an MS-62-plus grade, and possibly even MS-62+. It features an interesting set of diagonal clashmarks extending from beneath the eagle’s beak to the top of the left wing (facing).

The detail on all the raised devices is bold, with the mintmark displaying a super sharp strike.

This piece is destined to be included in one of the finest sets of Carson City half eagles.
