Every year around this time, we host a slew of events, and this year was no exception. This past Friday (May 22) started off a wave of excitement at Southgate Coins. After all, it was Rusty’s big birthday celebration. Read on to see how the celebration went.

This Tuesday, I (Maya) was elated to walk in the store and see the telltale signs of celebration: balloons, banners, and birthday wishes from my bosses and coworkers. I could already tell it was going to be an eventful day filled with pictures, presents, and of course, birthday cake. After all, I finally turned 21, and who better to celebrate my special day with than Southgate Coins!

This past Saturday, May 16, 2009, Otto Klay and his wife Christine, invited me (Cara) out for a practice round at the Montreux Golf and Country Club, where Southgate Coins’ First Annual Invitational Golf Tournament will be played on May 23, 2009. It was a gorgeous day that was full of golf tips, some good and some bad shots, and lots of laughter.

Every year around this time, we tear down boxes, organize our plethora of proof and mint sets, update our web inventory, and make the backend of our store a little more user-friendly for the months to come. It always seems like a daunting task to begin with, and this year we added a little twist to the action as we did some “spring assembly” as well.

The 135th running of the Kentucky Derby was held this past Saturday, May 2nd. That means that here at Southgate Coins it was Kentucky Derby Day. The day was filled with a variety of hats, cute outfits, good food, and many laughs. This Kentucky Derby Day was by far one of the best when it came to outfits and hats. We all would’ve looked right at home walking around Churchill Downs. Sadly though, when it came to betting on the horses, none of us did so hot, but we’ll get back to that later. Every year at Southgate Coins, we have a whole day dedicated to the Kentucky Derby. It’s a fun filled event that has everything: a little food, a little bit of hat wearing (in true Kentucky Derby fashion), a little horse watching, and even a little betting. Truly an event that’s hard not to eagerly anticipate. Click the link below to read Nicole's and Cara’s thoughts on waiting for their first Kentucky Derby Day at Southgate Coins. They echo my sentiments as well.

As you all know, Friday the 13th is supposed to be an unlucky day, on which bad things happen. Evidence of that is all the scary movies that have debuted on this notorious day. But, even though Jason might be exacting his revenge on innocents at Camp Crystal Lake, everybody at Southgate Coins is hardly feeling the effects of superstitious curses. Instead, we enjoyed a fun-filled (and very busy) Friday-the-13th-day-before-Valentine’s Day. Read on for more…

Rusty, Marie and a crew of five girls, we certainly know how to celebrate birthdays around here. And, it’s always nice when these special events are spread out over the year, giving us more excuses to party! On Saturday, January 31, we had just such an occasion marked on the calendar in honor of our very own Crystal (even though her birthday was technically on Sunday, February 1st). And of course, when someone reaches the quarter-of-a-century milestone (oops, I didn’t reveal that, did I?), you have to pull out all the stops! Read on for more...

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! - A New Proclamation in the Realm of the Coin Wizard
The other day, I (Maya) received an oblong, awkward-looking package here at the store, via our local UPS driver. I wasn’t sure whether I should refuse the delivery, because to my knowledge we weren’t expecting it, and it looked like it had just barely held together during its trip to get here. But, after seeing who it was from, and getting the “okay” from Marie to accept it, we all had a little laugh when we found out what it was. Read on for more...

As many of you webloggers know, Rusty Goe is a softy when it comes to accumulating knowledge, especially regarding his passions. One of those passions, of course, is all history related to the life and times of the Carson City Mint. Just last April, Rusty presented a lecture at the Carson City Historical Society on the different types of entertainment available to Carsonites back when the Carson City Mint was operating. Little did he know, that his studies on the topic would lead him down a different path nearly nine months later. Read on for more...
