This is a lovely, honey-gold-colored example of this key date in the “CC” half eagle series from the 1880s. You need to look close to spot any wear on this high-end piece, because it looks so much like a Mint State coin. The luminous luster radiates from its surfaces and the details on all the high points are razor sharp. A few wispy hairlines are visible in the obverse fields and the contact marks are commensurate with what you would see on an MS-61 example.

The 1884-CC half eagle features an unusual set of diagnostics. Raised die scratch lines are visible running through RTY in LIBERTY, extending upward diagonally in Ms. Liberty’s hair, and jetting out from in front of and below her eye.

You will not find a more attractive example of this date in an AU-58 holder. And remember, fewer than nine Mint State specimens are known.
