On a scale of one to five, I rate this business, the owners Rusty and Marie, and their employee Maya a TEN! I have never written an online review before but my recent experience with the Southgate Coins was so extraordinarily positive that I feel compelled to comment on the service I received from them.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and due to a contentious litigation issue with the settlement of my parent's estate I found myself in need of a coin expert who could appraise and liquidate a large, but not very valuable, collection that my father kept at a Reno bank. As one might expect when dealing with lawyers, there were restrictions put on me in terms of my handling of the coins and a requirement that they be appraised and disposed of in an unreasonably short period of time given the thousands of coins involved.
Rusty and Marie could not have been more accommodating and generous. Rusty accompanied me to the bank, helped me empty the safe deposit boxes and then transported the coins to his shop (which was an extra service required by the lawyers). He and Marie provided a comprehensive and detailed appraisal report and liquidated all of the coins in record time. This was a several-week process and Marie was wonderful about giving us regular progress reports. They bent over backwards to accommodate our trips to Reno and spent a lot of time with us explaining the details of the appraisal and answering every question and concern we had. I have complete confidence that I was treated more than fairly from beginning to end.
Rusty has a reputation for his expertise which is why I hired him. But what was equally impressive to me was the professionalism, generosity of time, friendly attitude and kindness they all showed me during a stressful time. My wife and I truly enjoyed our visits to their beautiful shop and will stop in whenever we are in Reno. Rusty, Marie and Maya made what was a painful task for me a very pleasant one........for that I am grateful. Thank you!

Several years ago while working to build a modest U.S. Type coin collection, I discovered Southgate Coins, owned by Rusty and Marie Goe. Their web site, www.southgatecoins.com, displayed a huge and diverse inventory with more than one of the coins I was searching for. I immediately contacted Southgate Coins by phone, mildly dreading the posturing and negotiation I expected to encounter when calling a dealer about a fairly expensive coin. Instead, the experience I had was more akin to taking my first breath of fresh air in the often profit-above-all-else atmosphere of numismatic dealers.
The Southgate staff took the time to ask about my collecting goals and parameters rather than rushing to complete the sale of the coins I had called about. When I finished that first phone conversation, not yet having made a decision to buy the coins, there was none of the usual closing pressure to buy before the coins were sold to someone else. Instead, I later received an email from the owner and veteran numismatist Rusty Goe, providing in-depth answers to the questions I had asked over the phone that day. He even included suggestions about acquiring other, less expensive coins which, he felt might provide a better balance for my particular collection. Wow, I was impressed!
Ever since that first phone call, I’ve come to understand that Rusty and Marie Goe’s style of conducting business focuses on the long-term view with their clients and involves levels of support and numismatic education that I had never before received.
Today, I am a much more informed and effective coin collector thanks to the “mentoring” I continue to receive from these generous and highly professional people. With their support, I no longer feel as if I am picking my way through a mine field when setting out to acquire an important coin.

Their knowledge of “CC” coins is second to none. Rusty's book on the subject can tell you everything you need to know about “CC” coins. It is a great book, I highly recommend it.
If there is a special coin you are looking for, no matter the mintmark (or lack thereof), I have no doubt that Southgate can find it. The 1873-CC Without Arrows dime has passed through the doors of Southgate Coins. I am sure that one day soon, they will have a 1933 Saint in the store, too.
