Gold Eagles
The gold eagle series is the rarest of the three gold denominations produced at the Carson City Mint. Slightly less than 300,000 pieces spanning 19 years were delivered at Nevada’s coin factory. Of that total no more than 9,500 pieces have survived.
Six of the dates, 1870-CC, 1872-CC, 1873-CC, 1877-CC, 1878-CC, and 1879-CC, have survival populations of less than 90 coins. The 1879-CC, with an original mintage of just 1,762 pieces, is the rarest date. The first-year-of-issue 1870-CC is the most popular date in the series.
