The U.S. government introduced the Shield design, nickel-composed five-cent piece in 1866. This series, which included the Rays and No Rays varieties, was minted until 1883.

The Proof-only issues from 1877 and 1878 are sought-after by collectors. The 1880 is the rarest date of all Business Strike Shield nickels.
