One 1878-CC Trade dollar towers above all other examples of this date-denomination insofar as eye appeal is concerned. This is the ex: Legend PCGS MS-66 specimen. Most recently, it is listed as the cornerstone representative in the Black Cat collection. Aside from this monster of a coin, several other 1878-CC Trade dollars vie for second position on the condition census. A PCGS MS-65 , CAC-approved specimen is the logical choice for the second-place slot. Displaying moderate, multi-colored toning it soared to $192,000 in a January 2019 Heritage auction. It is worth emphasizing that the MS-66 and MS-65 submission events listed in NGC’s census do not represent actual coins (at least as far is anyone is aware).

The PCGS MS-64, CAC-approved piece offered here is arguably the most aesthetically appealing example of this key date in the Carson City Trade dollar series other than the PCGS MS-66 coin. It once held a prominent place in the celebrated Battle Born collection of Carson City coins. The following quote from The Confident Carson City Coin Collector (Volume 2, page 513) describes this stunning specimen in part:

The PCGS MS-64 ex: Battle Born specimen radiates beaming luster from the obverse and reverse, which are virtually all-white, with only a thin chalky-russet-colored diagonal streak extending from Lady Liberty’s lap to star 4 on the obverse and a few scattered puffs of haze veiling the brilliant surfaces on both sides. (A small dark streak, possibly a grease mark or an imperfection that was on the blank planchet, is visible between stars 10 and 11 on the obverse.) The details on all the raised devices are as bold as one will see on a business-strike Trade dollar. The noticeable absence of contact marks adds to this coin’s high-end quality.

All who have ever viewed this marvelous example have expressed accolades regarding its wonderful state of presentation and its exquisite beauty. It will unquestionably grace an advanced set of Trade dollars, or simply serve as a splendid example of the denomination in a “CC” coin type set.
