Tire Kickers?

Had a couple that were what Heather and I thought were "tire-kickers" come in today. The husband looked around for a while and then called me over to see a few coins. He started pointing out Morgan $1s and just didn't stop. Once he was done with the certified case, he moved to the other case and took three times as many raw coins as he did certified... I was in disbelief. Not only that, but  then his wife pulls out her list of silver eagles that she needs. Needless to say they were waiting for a few minutes as Heather and I tried to write them a receipt (plus now my hand hurts). Just goes to show you that you can't always stereotype people, I guess that I needed to be reminded.

Coin Show 2006

Hip Hip Hooray the coin show is…this weekend? Well, even though my rhyming skills are a little off key, the news is true! The Carson City Coin Show is this Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th of August, in the old Carson City Mint, better known as the Nevada State Museum. We here at Southgate Coins have been busily working behind the scenes getting our supplies and coins ready for the big show. It is amazing to think that the Carson City coins that we are packing up here at the store in Reno are going to be displayed in their very birthplace in Carson City. Or even to think that the halls that we walk down this weekend at the show are the very halls that the great James Crawford himself walked down. As most coin collectors know, it is not just about the coins themselves that are important, but the history of the coins as well. Hope to see you all at the coin show – 600 North Carson Street in Carson – we will be the ones with bells on.

Heather Back from LV

I'm back from my vacation to Las Vegas, where I celebrated a friend's 21st Birthday. I was there over this last weekend and all I can say is that I'm glad to be back home in Reno—Vegas in August isn't always the best idea because of the temperatures, but I did have a great time. I hope to see all of you at the Carson City coin show this weekend!!

Amy's Snippets "Carson City Lecture"

The Carson City Historical Society hosted our very own Rusty Goe in presenting for the first time in public, his research on "The Most Frightening Experience in James Crawford’s Life" at the Carson City Public Library on Wednesday the 9th of August. Here's a little sneak preview of what went on at the lecture....

Ol' Time Sayings

Yesterday Rusty acquired some neat historic photos; I have been preparing them for another book that Rusty is planning to write. While I was scanning the images I came across these men wearing these aprons with what appeared to be their creed for having a good time:

Amy's Back!

I'm back!!! After spending the summer working down in the Mojave Desert at a Baskin Robbins, I am finally back where I belong here at Southgate. I was greeted this morning with smiling faces from the crew and tons of work to do! The gang has been super busy recently and I am glad to be back to assist with all the happenings. This Wednesday, I am especially looking forward to assisting Rusty with his lecture down in Carson City ... I got a little preview of the lecture today, and encourage all who are able to attend. Also, since "all work and no play" is not the Southgate way—this Friday, the entire Southgate Family is going out for dinner. As you can imagine, all company dinners are guaranteed to be extremely fun with tons of food and renewed friendships.

I am glad to be back. There is nothing better than working with the best people who are so committed to their customers and store.

Whistling Gophers

Dennis, a local gun dealer, asked me if we had seen any of those "whistling gophers." I said I wasn't sure. He said, "Oh I'm sure you have—I had one in here just about an hour ago," and he asked me, "What does gold Go-For?" and when I told him the price he let out a long "Pheeeww, Pheeew," a real loud gopher's whistle." I said,  "Oh yeah, we've got 'em."

High Temps in Reno

Temperatures still hot, around 100° and remember, "It's a Dry Heat." Really, we love all the seasons here and we are not complaining. We have lived in different places around the U.S. and Northern Nevada is tops! Heather reported that she finally got a nice stock of special occasion silver for the store. Our favorite is the birthday round of the squirrel with the butterfly on his tail. Too cute.

Coin Shop Talk

Had an interesting exchange with a customer today. A man came in to look at some of our pennies and picked out one for $89. After closer inspection and reference to his personal notes he decided that it was grossly overpriced and went on his way. After he left Rusty looked up the price with me in the coin prices magazine and lo and behold our price was $11 under market value. Oh, how we love the so-called experts that pop in from time to time.
