A Holiday Celebration Filled with Good Gifts, Good Foods, and Good Spirits

Well, even though it’s not quite Christmas day, we here at Southgate Coins tend to start the celebrations early, and of course, there’s no better time of the year to enjoy your place of work than at holiday time (at least here at Southgate Coins). We partake in gift-giving, receive Christmas bonuses, and of course, indulge in a full-belly-inducing Christmas dinner. Read on for more...

As most of you know, Thursday, November 27 was Thanksgiving this year. This holiday exists to celebrate family, friends, and thankfulness. Brittany's Birthday Bash and a C4OA Summit Meeting

November 21, 2008. Most people know it as a date. Others may even know that it was a Friday. But, we at Southgate Coins, will forever know it as "a wild, crazy, and exciting day." It all started as a memo on our calendar that told us we would be celebrating Brittany’s Birthday, as well as be welcoming C4OA members for a mini-regional meeting. The day quickly turned from a marked date on the calendar to an actual event-filled affair. There were many smiling and happy people hanging around the store talking about their favorite subjects (mostly coins!); there were huge birthday balloons on display, and there was one sweet chocolate cake waiting to be presented. Yup, it was truly an unforgettable day. Read on for the full impact...

Holiday Decorating at Southgate

Thanksgiving is finally here and that means it’s time for the holiday season to begin. This is my favorite time of the year. It’s all about food, fun, family, and togetherness. At Southgate Coins, we believe that holidays give us a reason to go all-out and celebrate, and this coming holiday season is no exception. Maya, Crystal, and I (Cara) spent all morning this past Saturday, 11/22/08, turning Southgate Coins into a holiday wonderland, with a 3-foot-tall Santa, garland around the windows, some stockings, wreaths, bells, and even a full 7-foot Christmas tree with “snow” around the bottom. Read on to hear about all our hard (and enjoyable) work...

Costumed Staffers Enliven Southgate's Halloween Festivities

As the next rainstorm of the season rolls into Reno, it’s once again time to celebrate Halloween at Southgate Coins. We decorated the store and put out the candy dish, but what really got all of the staff into the Halloween spirit were the costumes we adorned ourselves with for the occasion. Walking into the store on Friday morning, you would’ve been greeted by an assortment of characters. Brittany was “Bobbie the Builder,” Crystal was a swashbuckling pirate, Maya turned into a purple fairy princess, Marie and I (Cara) were both cute 1920’s flapper girls, and Rusty had transformed himself into “Buffalo Bill.” There was an assortment of accessories that came along with our costumes as well, like Rusty’s Colt Walker-44 replica gun and his authentic Winchester rifle, Crystal’s sword and rubber-band gun, and Maya’s lovely light-up star wand (complete with whimsical melody). Looking at previous year’s pictures of Southgate’s Halloween festivities, I believe that this year had some of the best costumes so far. To learn about the day's activites, read on...

Marie Gets Younger Once Again

Nope, we go all-out to make the event special, especially when it comes to our most favoritest boss, Marie. Read on to learn more...

Our Annual Boss' Day Recap

Some of you might be aware that Thursday, October 16 was National Boss Day. It’s a day Hallmark invented to sell more greeting cards, just like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s day.;} just kidding. Honestly, it’s a day where we, the Southgate employees, like to give a little thanks in recognition of all that Rusty and Marie do for us. And the crazy thing is, they didn’t even remember the day that gives thanks to them.

Good Friends, Good Food, and Good Music

Marie and I could easily get used to a social and entertainment schedule like we’ve experienced in August. You might have read about the enjoyable time we had a couple weeks ago with Michael and Jo Ann P., when the three of us surprised the daylights out of Marie (see Michael’s guest weblog, A Magical Weekend, from 8-11-08). Well, as it turned out, Marie and I weren’t done living the good life. Read on to learn more…

Finally, I Own a "CC" Coin - 8/21/08

As you know, here at Southgate Coins we are very partial to Carson City coinage and its history. Rusty wrote two books on the subject, founded the Carson City Coin Collector’s Club of America, and we consistently strive to publish an award-winning quarterly journal, affectionately named Curry’s Chronicle after Abe Curry, the first superintendent of the Carson City Mint. I now have a chance to add my “two cents” into the magical world of Carson City. Read on to learn more....

Rusty's Return from Baltimore

Every year around this time there is a one place where all the bigwig (and not so bigwig) numismatists seem to flock: the ANA World’s Fair of Money. They hold it in a different city every year, and this year all the energy focused on Baltimore, Maryland. As with all such big events that in any way involve us here at the store, it would only seem fitting to write a weblog about it! Read on to find out more…
